One of our favorite recent projects was a custom half-court basketball installation for a family in Puyallup's South Hill neighborhood. This project showcases our expertise in sports court construction and demonstrates what's possible in a typical residential backyard.
The Challenge
The homeowners wanted a regulation-quality basketball court for their teenage sons who play competitively. Their requirements included:
- Half-court dimensions (30' x 50')
- Professional-grade acrylic surface

- Proper drainage for Pierce County's rainfall
- Integration with existing landscaping
Site Preparation
The backyard had a moderate slope, requiring significant grading work. We:
- Excavated and graded the area to create a level pad
- Installed drainage systems to handle runoff
- Compacted 6 inches of crushed rock base
- Built forms for a 5-inch reinforced concrete slab
Concrete Installation
We poured a 5-inch thick concrete slab with:
- Rebar reinforcement grid (12" spacing)
- Fiber mesh for additional crack resistance
- Proper slope (1/8" per foot) for drainage
- Smooth trowel finish for acrylic application
The concrete cured for 28 days before acrylic application—crucial for preventing moisture issues.
Acrylic Surfacing
We applied a professional-grade acrylic sport surface system:
- Primer coat - sealed the concrete
- Base coats (2 layers) - provided cushioning and color
- Texture coat - added slip resistance
- Finish coat - final color and protection
The family chose a classic two-tone design: green playing surface with red key areas.
Striping and Details
Professional striping included:
- Three-point line
- Free throw lane
- Center circle
- Boundary lines
- Custom family logo at center court
All lines were painted with durable acrylic paint designed for outdoor sports surfaces.
Additional Features
To complete the court, we installed:
- In-ground adjustable basketball hoop (regulation height)
- LED lighting for evening play
- Perimeter fencing (installed by partner contractor)
